When it comes to our health, two factors typically come to mind: diet and exercise. Unfortunately, the majority of us overlook the most critical factor of all, which is a healthy mindset.

The phrase, “What you think is what you become” exists for a reason. A healthy business mindset is the greatest determining factor as to whether or not we’re successful in achieving our goals and getting what we want every day.

But here’s the best part: you can choose to have a better and more productive frame of mind right now. First, let’s explore what we mean by a healthy business mindset.

The way we think directly impacts our performance in business and in our lives. To get the most out of what we want from life, we should adopt the following:

  • Trust in ourselves. Believe that you are capable of creating your own success!
  • Be goal-oriented. Wishing for something won’t produce results, but working towards it certainly will.
  • Get uncomfortable. Stop fearing fear and embrace the challenge. Otherwise, you’ll never gain any true forward momentum.
  • Be patient. Change seldom happens overnight. It’s okay to wait for the right thing to come along.
  • Be open to learning. Life isn’t meant to be easy. Rather than perceive an event as a ‘struggle’, choose to see it as a learning experience that will allow you to grow.

According to a Harvard study conducted by Shawn Achor, individuals who had a healthy and positive brain were more creative, a lot more productive (31 percent higher), scored more sales (37 percent higher) and were 40 percent more likely to get promoted at work.

Having an optimistic approach to life as opposed to a pessimistic one also has substantial effects on our health. A number of studies have found that optimists are both physically and psychologically more healthy than those with a more negative outlook on life.

Multiple research study findings have revealed that pessimists have much higher rates of depression, had poorer cardiovascular health, and were less likely to survive after diagnosis for certain cancers.

How you can tap into the power of optimism

Using a handful of simple techniques, anyone can create lasting beneficial changes to their mindset.

Consistency is key if you are going to learn to trust yourself and the decisions you make.

If you find yourself struggling to hit goals, break those goals down into smaller more manageable bites. You want a goal to be so easy to accomplish that it would be downright impossible for you not to accomplish it.

Stress can be a wonderful motivator, but far too many of us are overwhelmed by it on a daily basis.

If you’re facing a stressful event, redirect your mind from asking, “Why is this happening to me?” and reclaim your power by asking, “What can I do about this?” If you are starting to feel overburdened, take a moment to unplug and meditate, practise some deep breathing, or sweat it out with some exercise (even a walk in the fresh air will do wonders!).

3. Be accountable

Accountability is a major motivator when it comes to having a healthy business mindset. It will help keep you focused and secure in knowing that you are in control.
